The Ostrava City Library (OCL) is an important cultural and information providing institution for the City of Ostrava - the third largest city in the Czech Republic. It ranks among the nation's great public libraries, offering its library and information services to all age groups and sectors of society. It was founded in 1921.

OCL comprises of the Central Library and 27 branch libraries. The founder of the library is the Statutory City of Ostrava, out of whose budget the library is also financed.

Each year the library enrols 48 000 readers, of which almost 13 000 are children, and is visited by 561 thousand visitors, who borrow approx. 1 900 000 items.

Composition of the collection: 770 000 book units: books, bound newspapers and magazines, sheet music, sound documents, video cassettes, multimedia.
Books in other languages: English (part of the collection is made available in a separate department - the OCL British Centre), German, French, Polish, Russian, Spanish and a small sample of works in Romani.

OCL Central Library

The Central Library is a multistorey building traversed by an arcade open throughout the day, and is situated on the banks of the Ostravice by the Sýkorův most.
Within the building are located the central office, the finance and operations department, the department for acquisitions and collection management as well as separate departments providing library and information services.

The loans counter for adults, main reading room, multimedia reading room, music department:
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 08:00 - 18:00, Saturday 09:00 - 12:00 (Wednesday - closed)

Children's and young people's section, OCL British Centre

Reading room for newspapers and magazines:

The main entrance to the library is from the street ulice 28. října, and is located on the right, before entering the arcade (building A):

Ground floor: cloakroom, loans counter for adults, main reading room
1st floor: Children's and young people's section
2nd floor: music department, social hall
3rd floor: British Centre, multimedia reading room and classroom

Also located within the building are a small theatre - the Arena Chamber Theatre and a pleasant tea shop.
